Postpartum Thyroiditis

Postpartum Thyroiditis

Postpartum thyroiditis is a condition in which the thyroid gland becomes inflamed after childbirth, causing hormone levels to become unbalanced. It’s relatively common and often temporary—but it can affect your energy, mood, and overall well-being.

What Is It?

An inflammation of the thyroid gland that occurs within the first year after giving birth. It often causes two phases:

  • Hyperthyroid phase (too much thyroid hormone)
  • Hypothyroid phase (too little thyroid hormone)

Two Phases Explained

  1. Hyperthyroid Phase (First 1–3 Months Postpartum)

Symptoms: Anxiety, rapid heartbeat, weight loss, irritability, heat intolerance, shaking hands. Often confused with postpartum anxiety or just “new mom stress”.

  1. Hypothyroid Phase (Around 4–8 Months Postpartum)

Symptoms: Fatigue, weight gain, depression, constipation, dry skin, sensitivity to cold. May be mistaken for postpartum depression.

How It’s Diagnosed

Blood tests measuring TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) and T3/T4 (thyroid hormones), along with a physical exam and discussion of symptoms.

Treatment

Often not needed for mild cases; symptoms may resolve on their own.
Severe hypothyroidism may require temporary or long-term thyroid hormone replacement (levothyroxine).
Symptoms usually resolve within 12–18 months, but some women may develop permanent hypothyroidism.

When to Seek Help

Seek help if you experience:

  • Unexplained fatigue, mood swings, weight changes, or feeling “off” beyond normal postpartum adjustment
  • Family history of thyroid problems
  • Previous thyroid issues or autoimmune conditions

Quick Facts

  • Affects 5–10% of women after giving birth
  • Often underdiagnosed because symptoms mimic common postpartum challenges

• Early detection = easier treatment and improved well-being
